Library Buildings and Equipment & Libraries for Children and Young Adults

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Event: Open Session in Milan, IFLA

Date:  August 24, 2009

Download PDF:  IFLA (Milan) 2009 Session on Library Buildings and Equipment, Children’s Library Design Thoughts

Here is an article providing  a brief history of the children’s library and a wide diversity of opinions from library directors and library designers on what factors to take into account and themes to consider for these spaces.  Great reference for those public and school libraries considering building new children’s library spaces and/or renovating space to create new children’s sections within an existing library.

Here is an excerpt from the session:

The heart of the new library is a physical structure – the red thread – that twists and winds its way through the library, working both as a decoration and active communication tool and mediatory element for users and library staff. It mediates between three zones within the library: the meeting place, the quiet work place and the place for inspiration. The library in Hjorring does not have a division between areas for children or adults, they move around in each others zones. It was essential to create a sliding and balanced transition of offers for children, teens and adults. Thus the library has places for every taste and all generations, shared as well as separate.

Library Inc. – Commercialized University Libraries

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Date:  October 22, 2010

Title:  Library Inc.

Created by Daniel Goldstein, Librarian at the University of California at Davis

Source:  The Chronicle of Higher Education

Web Link To Article: Library, Inc.

This was interesting library article forwarded to me by a concerned university librarian about the state of U.S. higher education libraries and their future direction.

From industry-backed research to CEO-style executive salaries and perquisites, the influence of corporate America on universities has been the subject of much popular and scholarly scrutiny. University libraries have largely escaped that attention. Yet libraries, the intellectual heart of universities, have become perhaps the most commercialized academic area within universities, with troubling implications for the future of higher education.
