Event: Open Session in Milan, IFLA

Here is an article providing  a brief history of the children’s library and a wide diversity of opinions from library directors and library designers on what factors to take into account and themes to consider for these spaces.  Great reference for those public and school libraries considering building new children’s library spaces and/or renovating space to create new children’s sections within an existing library.

Here is an excerpt from the session:

The heart of the new library is a physical structure – the red thread – that twists and winds its way through the library, working both as a decoration and active communication tool and mediatory element for users and library staff. It mediates between three zones within the library: the meeting place, the quiet work place and the place for inspiration. The library in Hjorring does not have a division between areas for children or adults, they move around in each others zones. It was essential to create a sliding and balanced transition of offers for children, teens and adults. Thus the library has places for every taste and all generations, shared as well as separate.
